TASTE OF MAURITIUS
Mauritius
“Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius" - Mark Twain
Where is Mauritius located?

Don't fret if you don't know the answer. Mauritius is so small that sometimes it does not even appear on the World map.
My beautiful country is part of Africa and not Asia. We are our own independent republic. The island is known for the extinct dodo, white sandy beaches, and luxury hotels. And of course friendly people!
Where do Mauritians come from? Our multi cultural people originate from Africa, Asia and Europe. We speak Creole, French, English, Hindi and other Asian languages.

PASTRIES, SAVORIES & VANILLA TEA
Mauritius, with its rich colonial history, was introduced to the tea plant by a French priest, Father Galloys in 1760. However, it remained only a museum plant until the arrival of the British on the island in the 19th century, where commercial tea cultivation was encouraged. In 1919, vanilla tea was introduced on the local market and till to date, remains the most popular drink among Mauritians.
The cuisine of Mauritius is a blend of African, European and Indian influences. Most of the dishes and practices into the culinary traditions are inspired by former African slaves, Indian workers and Colonial people during the 19th century.
